If you are a coffee enthusiast and are looking for an excellent machine to grind your coffee beans at home, then check out the Sette 30 AP by Baratza. It is one of their newer versions, and while their previous model the Sette 270 had won awards and earned a right name, the Sette 30 is also quickly gaining popularity. It is affordable and an excellent machine for home.Baratza Sette 30 Conical Burr Grinder 1130 Review

The Sette 30 is an entry-level espresso grinder designed for home use. If you are a beginner barista, then this is the grinder for you. As mentioned above, it is often compared to its older brother, the Sette 270 mainly because the technology and the set-up are almost the same with a few differences. The Sette 30 is perfect for those on a budget but still wish to have consistent espresso grinds.

The Design

We love the design of this grinder. It is a compact-sized machine that comes with a sleek appearance and no over-sized complicated buttons or knobs. The body is made of hard plastic that is easy to keep clean. With a height of only 15.75 inches, you can place it on any counter-top or beneath your kitchen cabinets. It weighs around 8 pounds so you can also carry it around or move quickly during cleaning or shifting.

The Grinding

This is a 40-millimeter conical burr grinder, so it comes with two rough surfaces instead of a single blade. The beans are ground in between the two rotating burrs to create uniform grinds. This mechanism differs from a blade grinder where a blade is used to split beans in half, resulting in faster but less consistent grinds.Baratza Sette 30 Conical Burr Grinder 1130 Review

However, one unique thing that the Sette grinders come with is their straight-through design. Here only the top (outer) burr rotates while the inner burr remains stationary. This innovative feature gives you high speed grinding with low grind retention.

Save Big

If you are worried about wasting too much coffee, then rest assured that with impressive low grind retention, the Sette 30 will help you reduce wastage and save a lot on coffee in the long run. You can now use your pricey and favorite coffee beans without hesitation.

You can get a speed of up to 5.5g/sec if you want a coarse grind. For fine grinding, the machine works at approximately 3.5g/sec. The spinning outer burr and the still inner burr allows the machine to work fast but without compromising on the consistency of the coffee beans.

Grind Settings

With thirty macro grind settings, you can achieve your desired espresso grind consistency with ease and no hassle. This may seem a little less impressive when compared to other grinders that come with micro-adjustments that provide you with more control and finer grinds, but for most entry-level espresso machines, this is good enough.Baratza Sette 30 Conical Burr Grinder 1130 Review

The hopper holds around 300-400g of coffee at a time and is very easy to remove. The smooth removal enables you to make changes without wasting coffee beans.

LCD Display

For accurate timing and dose control, the machine comes equipped with a digital timer that you can locate on a back-lit LCD. With a timer of up to 60 seconds (dosing option), beginner baristas will get the chance to create a precise blend of perfect tasting coffee every time.

Noise Level

Because of its high-speed grinding, the Sette 30 can be a little noisy. The open design and speed make it louder than most burr grinders. If you are planning to grind coffee with this machine, then we suggest doing it during the daytime when the noise will not be that obvious or annoying.

Frequently Asked Questions:

With no micro-adjustments, are the adjustments fine enough for the perfect settings?

The settings are numbered as 31 to 1. If you want the finest grind, then setting one will do the job. The higher the number goes, the coarser the grind gets. With macro adjustments, only you have limited grind size, but you can still get the perfect setting depending on your preference of coffee texture.

What is the voltage for this grinder machine?

The voltage is 110.

Can I use this grinder without the hopper?

You can use the Aeropress to hold underneath the grinder instead of the hopper if you are using only a small dose, but we still recommend using the hopper as it stores beans in a proper way before the grinding process.

Does the machine come with a warranty?

Baratza offers a one-year warranty on this product. However, check this out with your store before purchase.

Will this grinder works well with for auto-drip coffee makers?

No, this grinder cannot grind coarsely enough for auto-drip coffee makers. It works well with primary espresso machines mostly.

The Sette 30 is a great coffee grinder for the money. As the name suggests, this machine has limited use with only 30 macro adjustments, so those looking for a wider range will probably be better off with the Sette 270 model.

But on the other hand, we feel that the Sette 30 is a better suit for beginners. The low retention and high-speed grinding also make this a nice little machine to own at a lower price.
